The challenges of this publication are to highlight the deep unity that binds the so diverse peoples of Côte d'Ivoire and to show how their varied cultures find their sources in the very heart of the country and beyond its borders. The grandiose beauty and formidable strength of the sculptures speak for themselves and express the astonishing richness of the arts of Côte d'Ivoire, which goes beyond its borders but finds there an exceptional place of expression. This book presents an initiatory journey, recapitulating the great cultural moments of the Ivory Coast and facilitating the understanding of a multiple cultural world: geographical framework, population, presentation of historical data (maps, migrations), illustration of the most significant sculpted signs located in an aesthetic perspective of the history of art through various techniques (sculpture, goldsmithing, painting, gold weighing, weaving ...). More than two hundred and fifty objects are presented, with a focus on the major works of great wooden sculpture, Akan goldsmithery and its terracotta. The conclusions underline the rich heritage of Côte d'Ivoire that still transmits today and how much unity and diversity are combined at the cultural and national levels.
