A Belgian aid worker, biologist by training and doctor of anthropology, Guy Thilmans (1922-2001) devoted thirty-five years of his life to Africa and Senegal, his second homeland, where his studies also involved archaeology, history and museography. Some forty researchers wished to pay tribute to him by showing, through their work, the extension given to his research. Their papers were presented at the international colloquium "Anthropology, Archaeology, and Museology in West Africa" held from December 13 to 16, 2004, under the auspices of the Institut fondamental de l'Afrique noire - Cheikh Anta Diop (IFAN), and were supplemented by unpublished texts by Guy Thilmans. In all, thirty contributions, two-thirds of which concern the Senegalese space, are brought together under four themes: Archives and History, Museums and Heritage, Anthropology and Archaeology, and Prehistory and Environment. This book is therefore an exceptional inventory of research at the beginning of the 21st century and a testimony to the discreet but fruitful work of Guy Thilmans during the last third of the previous century.
