Tribal Art

This extremely rare and reference work is the culmination of in-depth work on the various cultures of the tribes of Black Africa. Each of them is presented through its most significant ritual and functional objects, thus allowing a clear vision of its different styles. The result of a complex creative process involving several people - the sponsor, the village diviner and the sculptor - African art objects always had a religious, social or magical function and were only very rarely created for purely decorative. Initiatory ceremonies of passage to adulthood, births, marriages, circumcisions, funerals, harvest ceremonies..., at each event, at each ancestral rite, its mask, its statue, its crest. The works selected in this book were produced between the beginning of the 1st millennium and the first years of the 20th century, before Western interest in so-called primitive arts gradually diverted them from their primary function.
