In black Africa, privileged supports of ritual acts, masks appear then. important ceremonies: worship of ancestors, of the dead, rites of initiation or fertility. Ample iconography and the contribution of researchers and art historians show the extreme diversity of masks, both from the point of view of form and function. Simple or complex, helms or crests, these objects have lost, for. most, their extraordinary costumes of fibres, leaves or feathers. Naturalistic, sometimes zoomorphic or extremely stylized, only the faces remain.
